3D printed cutters are tougher than they look. They will chip a hard biscuit before they break, they do not rust, and a good print holds a sharper edge than most supermarket metal. There is exactly one thing that destroys them, and it is sitting in your kitchen right now.
Never the dishwasher
PLA begins to soften at around 55°C. A dishwasher runs well past that, and the cutter comes out warped, oval, and unable to cut a clean line ever again. This is not a durability question - it is a material fact, and it applies to every PLA cutter from every maker.
The washing routine
- Rinse in warm, not hot water as soon as you have finished cutting. Dough that has dried on takes ten times the effort.
- Use a soft brush - an old toothbrush is ideal - to get into the embossed detail.
- Air dry fully before it goes away. Trapped moisture in a stack of cutters is what causes the musty smell people occasionally report.
Storing them
Flat, and out of the sun. A car in July, a windowsill, or the top of a warm appliance will all slowly deform a cutter that never touched hot water. A shallow drawer or a lidded box is perfect; hanging them from a hook is fine too, as long as the shape is a closed ring.
A word on hygiene
Printed surfaces have microscopic layer lines, which hold onto residue more than smooth steel does. Treat a printed cutter the way you would treat a wooden chopping board: wash before and after use, dry it properly, and do not leave dough sitting in it overnight. Done that way it is no more of a concern than any other kitchen tool.
Getting a clean release
If dough is sticking in the detail, the dough is warm. Chill it. If it still sticks, dip the cutter in flour and tap off the excess between cuts - not too much, or the flour builds up in the pattern and softens the imprint.
A printed cutter that is rinsed warm, dried properly and stored flat will still be cutting cleanly in five years. One trip through a dishwasher ends it in ninety minutes.
